What We Do
The mission of the Walton School Counseling Department is to provide a comprehensive program that assists all children in becoming effective students, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners. in order to do so, we promote communication and collaboration among all adults in a child's life which include: parents, guardians, school staff, and other community members. We support our mission by providing support in the three developmental areas: personal/social, academic, and career.
Students often have a dificult time learning when they have other stressors in their lives. We provide a number of supports in this area. We provide small group counseling in areas that include: family, friendship, stress, anger, and study skills. Walton also has an active peer mediation program which assists student who are in conflict with each other. This is a safe, confidential method wherein students are encouraged to communicate with each other in a productive, positive manner.
We help students in a number a ways with academics. Each spring we communicate with all Walton students about next year's course offerings. We help them make informed decisions about core and exploratory classes. Please refer to our "Documents" page for this year's exploratory offerings and descriptions of levels of the different core classes. During winter, all eighth graders meet with their school counselor for high school registration. Eighth graders are also given the opportunity to visit with the high school counselors and tour Monticello High School. Please feel free to contact the school counseling office if you have any questions about scheduling or your child's academic path.
At the middle school level, we engage students in career exploration. We try to teach them the many career paths that exist. All seventh graders visit the Career EXPO at UVA in the fall. All eighth graders visit the Charlottesville Albemarle Career and Technical Center (CATEC) and hear from business leaders in the community through the Commonwealth Scholars program.
