Question of the Week

Question of the week

What is the expectation for human resources staff or principals, directors, or other hiring managers to contact a person who applies and interviews for a job but does not get chosen for the job, particularly a person who is already an ACPS employee?

Thank you for the question! Human Resources recommends, as a best practice, that hiring managers directly handle the communication with candidates that did not move forward for the position professionally, timely, and empathetically, and where possible leaving the door open for future interactions. Hiring managers typically contact candidates not moving forward via email or phone call. Typically if there is a large set of individuals interviewed a personal email is preferred.  Smaller interview pools can have phone calls.

Candidates that are not hired should be contacted within a week of the final candidate being approved. The communication should share the hiring manager's gratitude for the interest in the position and thank the candidate for their time and preparation.  Finally, where possible, the hiring manager can suggest continued review of the ACPS vacancies. This approach gives closure to the process and can leave candidates with a positive impression, despite not being selected for the position.
