Question of the Week

Question of the week

It seems like ACPS has just one basic 10-month contract that covers all licensed staff with a teacher contract. What do you think about offering different contracts to different types of teachers and licensed staff working in the schools?

Thank you for this thoughtful question. Offering different contracts to various types of teachers and licensed staff could have both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, tailored contracts can provide greater flexibility, addressing specific roles, responsibilities, and schedules, thereby better meeting the diverse needs within our schools. Additionally, customized contracts might enhance our ability to attract and retain specialized staff by offering terms that align more closely with their expertise and work patterns. This approach could also include performance-based incentives, fostering motivation and excellence among staff.

However, there are potential drawbacks to consider. Managing multiple contract types can add complexity to administration and payroll processes. Moreover, variations in contracts might lead to perceptions of unfairness or inequality among staff, potentially impacting morale. There are also budgetary implications, as differentiated contracts could affect financial planning and require careful adjustments.

Again this is a thoughtful question in light of the staffing challenges public schools face. My goal is to find great educators to complement our already outstanding ACPS staff. To do that, I must be committed to considering all perspectives to best support our staff and students.
