Question of the Week

Question of the week

Culturally Responsive Teaching should be differentiated. You should allow certification from universities that offer Culturally Responsive Teaching certification.

Based on feedback from educators across the division who represent diverse grades, roles, and responsibilities, we launched our NEW ACPS Micro-Credential Program this year. It has been designed to specifically allow for everyone to learn and apply the most important practices as a Culturally Responsive Educator here in Albemarle County Public Schools as it aligns with our ACPS Culturally Responsive Teaching Framework. The program supports educators in learning about and implementing culturally responsive mindsets and practices in order to close achievement gaps through learning and application.

These asynchronous sessions include self-guided learning experiences, which include three assignments to be completed within 6 consecutive weeks. They are designed to correlate with the sub-indicators associated with each characteristic directly. This format allows teachers to include professional learning and experiences from external programs and resources as evidence of professional learning.

Our goal is to ensure educators are engaged in a student-centered process embedded in daily teaching practices aligned to our vision, mission, goals, and strategic plan while adhering to VDOE’s Cultural Competent Educators Bill (HB1904/SB1196) that requires instruction or training in cultural competency effective for the 22-23 school year.

The current micro-credentialing process is an attempt to honor all prior learning experiences of teachers around culturally responsive teaching within and outside of the division while providing job-embedded opportunities to implement practices aligned with the ACPS framework.
