Welcome to 2021-22!

Dr. Haas talks about some of the preparation going on at ACPS as schools get ready to open for fall of 2021.

Welcome to 2021-22

Whether you are a veteran ACPS staff member or you are joining us for the first time this year, welcome to the 2021-22 school year! Your school administrators and operational department heads met on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week for our annual fall leadership retreat. We began unpacking our new strategic plan, Learning for All; spent time discussing and giving feedback on the new version of our Teacher Performance Appraisal; participated in professional development regarding PLC+ and how to tackle the Third-Grade Reading Gap (in pre-K through third grade); and, of course, reviewed our COVID-19 mitigation strategies. Your leadership team is here to support you and provide the resources you need to support the academic, physical, and social-emotional needs of your students, and we are ready for 2021-22.

Video Spotlight

I thought it might be helpful to share with you a video clip from our July 8 school board meeting outlining our use of federal and local funds to support learning recovery: Resource Utilization to Support Learning Recovery: Summer 2021 – Summer 2022.

In case you missed them, here are some recent local media stories highlighting the work of our students and staff:

Operations Update

In June, I shared that our Transportation Services Department applied to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to receive a grant for two electric school buses. I wanted to provide you with this exciting update: Our Director of Transportation Services, Jim Foley, emailed me recently to let me know that he and his staff have been granted two electric buses for ACPS!

I want to give a shout-out to all of our custodial crews, both day and night, for the Herculean tasks they undertake to make sure our schools are ready and as comfortable as possible for children and staff on August 23. Every year, it seems like each school is taken apart and put back together with investments in infrastructure and aesthetics, and it only works with the leadership of our custodians. Thank you!

Portrait of an ACPS Learner

Here at ACPS, we know just how great our students and staff are and have decided to share that knowledge with our community. With our Portraits of a Division series, we aim to highlight one student or one staff member each week to show just how awesome our school community is. Check out our most recent highlight: Portrait of an ACPS Student: Sofia Hirano.
