AI in ACPS: What You Need to Know
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly changing how we live and learn. In Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS), we believe AI can help students learn, support teachers, and make work more efficient, while always keeping people at the center.
🔍 What Is AI?
AI is technology that can do tasks that usually need human thinking. There are two main types:
- Generative AI: Creates new things, like text, images, or ideas.
- Assistive AI: Helps with tasks, like translating languages, summarizing information, or organizing schedules.
🎯 Why Are We Using AI?
AI is already part of the world our students are growing up in. When used carefully, it can:
- Make learning more personal and engaging.
- Help teachers save time and focus on students.
- Prepare everyone for a future where AI is common.
🌟 Benefits
Students can:
- Use AI to spark ideas and create examples for projects.
- Explore topics with AI-generated summaries and examples.
- Personalize learning with suggestions matched to their needs.
Teachers and staff can:
- Save time on routine tasks.
- Analyze data to better support student learning.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with families.
⚠️ Challenges We’re Watching
- Bias: AI can reflect unfair patterns in data.
- Misinformation: Not everything AI creates is correct.
- Privacy: We must protect personal information.
- Overuse: AI shouldn’t replace human thinking or connection.
- Representation: AI must respect all cultures and identities.
- Environmental Impact: AI can use a lot of energy and natural resources.
✅ Our Commitments
We will:
- Keep students, families, and staff at the center of learning.
- Use AI as a tool to support, not replace, human skills and relationships.
- Protect privacy and handle data responsibly.
- Regularly review how AI is used in our schools.
