Per Human Resources 1/10/2023:
EVERY break in skin should be treated as a bloodborne pathogens exposure and followed as a workers’ compensation case. We have an obligation to report every incident to OSHA by law. This also helps us notice recurring incidents areas that we need to focus on to help improve safety in and around your work areas. School OAs are familiar with this documentation and should be able to help facilitate this process.
If there is a break in skin, an incident form and panel of physicians form should always be filled out, at minimum, and sent back to HR (You can utilize workerscomp@k12albemarle.org to send). This information will be sent to our local health department and our local occupational health facility to draw blood and determine if any additional steps need to be taken.
If the employee wishes to have their blood drawn (we cannot force them) for exposure, please contact HR until the new policy is released as they will help facilitate an appt. We strongly encourage this as an important safety measure for both our staff and students. At this point in time, the recommendation is that all staff get their blood tested and the information in the questionnaire be obtained for the child (elementary age). The health department will review and determine whether additional testing on the child will be required. The following forms will be needed:
BRHD: School Exposure Form
EBAB: Blood Testing Release Form
Dear Healthcare Provider: Testing
HIPAA Release
