ALICE training provides a framework for people to feel empowered to make choices during moments of crisis. This training requires people to complete a three hour e-Learning module prior to in-person training. |

Participants will explore the “why” of the inquiry design model as the primary instructional vehicle for teaching Social Studies. These inquiry units are required for all K-5 teachers as the core component of the guaranteed viable curriculum in Social Studies. This session will focus specifically on K-2. |

Instructors: Debbie Collins Location: Center 1 - Large PD Space Description Day 1 - Using Norms to Support Professional Discourse: The purpose of this session is to work with teacher leaders in supporting the use of norms to create intellectual safe spaces for professional discourse in PLC meetings and other professional settings. Participants will learn how the use of norms can create increased opportunities for authentic collaboration among colleagues. Additionally, they will explore ways to co-create norms within a group setting, discuss and examine strategies to reset norms, and set personal goals for next year regarding areas to improve the implementation and use of norms. Description Day 2 - Activating PLCs: The purpose of this session is to explore and examine the role of an activator in the PLC setting. Participants will receive a copy of PLC+ by John Almarode and the PLC+ activators guide. They will examine protocols and strategies to support the work of PLCs to increase student achievement and close gaps in performance of students. Participants will set personal goals for next year regarding areas to improve their leadership practices within the PLC setting by choosing strategies from the Activators guide to support their work.
Description Day 3 - Engaging in Difficult Conversations: The purpose of this session is to unpack strategies to support engaging in difficult conversations with colleagues. Participants will examine and explore coaching stems and language that allows for open and honest dialogue in a respectful way. Participants will engage in role play and case study analysis to develop strategies to support meaningful conversations working towards continuous improvement. Additionally, they will look at characteristics of effective feedback and how to navigate providing feedback to others.

Develop a toolbox of strategies to design purposeful units and performance tasks in the three modes of communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational) and identify day-to-day learning activities that support language goals. Apply the principles of backward design and the use of authentic resources to effectively plan meaningful learning experiences in the target language. Explore the assessment of language skills in each mode of communication as well as strategies for involving learners in self-assessment for ongoing proficiency growth. |

Multisensory Structured Literacy Instruction Training Summer 2023
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is seeking K-6 general education and special education teachers and reading specialists who provide reading instruction to children identified with a disability to participate in a Multisensory Structured Literacy Instruction (MSLI) Training in July 2023. This professional development is based on the Orton-Gillingham instructional approach to teaching language structure for reading remediation. Approximately 100 participants will be selected through a competitive application process. Virginia public school teachers may apply by completing the Summer 2023: VDOE Teacher Application by June 2, 2023. Applicants who have previously applied for this professional development opportunity will be given priority consideration. Acceptance notification and registration information will be emailed to participants by June 9, 2023.
Training
Participants will be assigned to a regional Virginia Tech Continuing Education Center, or an affiliate within a reasonable driving distance of the participant’s home, to attend the training. If the driving distance exceeds 75 miles one way, the VDOE will assume the costs of lodging and meals. School divisions are encouraged but not required to provide mileage reimbursement to its participants. Attendance is mandatory for each training session; participants must complete all 30 hours of training to receive their certificates of completion.
Training sessions are scheduled 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on the following dates:

Participants selected will be provided:
- Instructional materials for MSLI implementation;
- Follow up and support through a professional learning community and/or coaching to facilitate implementation during the 2023-2024 school year as a Tier 1, Tier 2, or
Tier 3 intervention; - Stipend of $500; and
- Orton-Gillingham certificate of completion for the Classroom Educator 30-hour coursework.
Application selection criteria include:
- Knowledge of the K-6 English Standards of Learning;
- Instructional experience with students of varied learning styles, abilities, and aptitudes, including students with disabilities and students with limited English proficiency;
- Regional representation;
- Completed online application; and
- A signed recommendation on school letterhead from the applicant’s school division principal acknowledging support for participation in the training and an administrative commitment to MSLI implementation, which must be attached to the online application.

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), Department of Special Education and Student Services is seeking 75 general education and special education teachers, grades 4-12, to participate in Unlocking Big Words: Strategies for Decoding Multisyllabic Words Training. This virtual professional development opportunity is designed to address the needs of older students who struggle with decoding and determining the meaning of multisyllabic words. Sessions will be facilitated by VDOE and Training and Technical Assistance Centers staff members with practicing professionals in the field.
Teachers interested must register by June 16, 2023, for one of the training sessions listed below. Those who have attended a structured literacy professional development course, such as the Institute of Multisensory Education’s Comprehensive Training or the VDOE’s Multisensory Structured Literacy Instruction training, are not appropriate candidates for this opportunity.
- August 2-3, 2023, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
- August 10-11, 2023, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Attendance is mandatory for the entire two-day training to receive a certificate of completion. Selected participants will receive instruction on how to use the principles of syllabication to build fluency and comprehension in their struggling readers including those with specific learning disabilities. Participants will be provided instructional materials and an opportunity to attend a follow-up Community of Practice event.

SURN Leadership Conference
Time: 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Location: William and Mary School of Education
Description: School division teams and individuals attend the conference for the opportunity to share with other educators, discuss topics with leading researchers, reflect on the prior school year, be inspired, and plan strategically for the upcoming year. In addition to keynote speeches from Michael Fullan, Vivian Hamilton, Carol Ann Tomlinson, and Chris Reina, participants will also choose sessions of interest from among the conference strands. Some of those sessions are being led by faculty in the School Psychology and Counselor Education program as well as the Educational Planning, Policy, and Leadership program. Others will be led by the VA Center for Inclusive Schools, the Virginia Department of Education, school leaders from across the state, and other experts in the field.

Seizure Training for School Personnel Epilepsy Foundation takes 60 minutes and includes a course completion certificate.
Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine You must register first and then after logging in, type Saving a Life Recognizing and Responding to Anaphylaxis in the search bar at the top right of the screen. The course video is about 15 minutes and includes a test and a certificate.

- Diabetes Awareness Training This training is for any school staff who work with students with diabetes, but are not tasked with performing procedures. (< 1 hour)
- Diabetes Training for Non-Medical School Personnel This is a more thorough training for school personnel who may be tasked with performing diabetes care procedures. (Approximately 4 hours).
- Continuous Glucose Monitoring This is for school personnel who work with students who wear continuous glucose monitors. (< 1 hour)
- Insulin Pump Management This is for school personnel who work with students who wear insulin pumps. (< 1 hour)

Rosetta Stone for Educators
Rosetta Stone for Educators is an online language course that participants complete independently and at their own pace. Most educators choose to learn Spanish, but other languages are available in the program. There are five proficiency levels with eight lessons per level. There is no placement test, so novice learners begin with the first lesson and those with some proficiency in the target language may move around within the lessons to find the best starting place for them. The course facilitator, as well as Rosetta Stone Support, is available to answer questions as needed. The number of hours spent in the course is up to each participant, however, a minimum of five hours is required to earn PD re-certification points.
