English as a Second or Other Language

Albemarle County Adult Education offers year-round Beginning to Advanced level English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to adult learners throughout Central Virginia. Our students not only work on improving their English language skills, but they also learn about the United States, the Central Virginia community, and the many services and opportunities available to them here.

Civics and Workforce Readiness ESOL Classes

The Civics and Workforce Readiness ESOL Classes will help beginning to advanced level ESOL students improve speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills within the context of civics and workforce readiness. This class provides an opportunity for students to practice English in small group settings that provide individualized help for particular needs.

Civics and Workforce Readiness ESOL Classes (Beginning to High Beginning Levels)
Tuition:  $75.00 (All materials included.)

 Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Career Pathways and Academic English Class

The Career Pathways and Academic English Class will help intermediate to advanced level students acquire the level of language proficiency needed to enter community college and/or pursue professional certifications. 

This class will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Virginia Career Works Center located at

English for Community Involvement

This class helps students learn to use the English language to communicate effectively in their Central Virginia Community. In this course students will learn English as it relates to the job interview, the culture of work, responding to emergency situations, calling 911, understanding local, state and federal governments, and providing and asking for directions.

Beginning Wednesday, January 8, 2020​. Class will meet every Wednesday morning from 9:00 to noon at the Northside Library, 705 Rio Road West, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
