Public Sector Collective Bargaining was illegal in Virginia until the General Assembly passed a lawin 2020 permitting local governments to enable it through a resolution beginning in 2021. The Albemarle Education Association petitioned for Collective Bargaining rights in 2023 and the School Board declined. In 2023 and 2024 the ACPS School Board worked with the AEA to develop a Resolution that would enable Collective Bargaining in the school division. The Resolution was passed on April 11, 2024.
During the week of January 19-23, 2026, Union Members voted overwhelmingly to ratify the tentative agreements.
On February 12, 2026, the ACPS School Board voted to approve the tentative agreements, and they became effective as of July 1, 2026.
