Professional Vulnerability - Taking on the Culturally Responsive Teaching Challenge
Julia Weed has been teaching science at Jackson P. Burley Middle School for 22 years. She has taught 7th grade life science for that entire time, added in 6th grade science after her first decade, and took the leap into dual language education at the end of her second decade. Julia is a firm believer in passion, curiosity, and joy with her students, and she takes delight in muddling through things together and showing that she is also continuing to learn. Julia has been a leader in Olweus Anti-bullying programs in Albemarle County, and currently serves as the Diversity Resource Teacher at Burley. She is also one of the founding members of Cville Pride, and has been a Safe Space trainer and Side-by-Side (formerly ROSMY) group facilitator for LGBTQIA+ youth. Julia keeps chickens and bees, because the chaos of middle school just isn’t enough for her.
