If You’re Completing Behind the Wheel with a Private Provider:
If your student will not be taking Behind the Wheel through ACPS, you will need a certificate that shows they have already completed the classroom portion of driver education. Private driving schools require this certificate before enrolling students in Behind the Wheel.
To request this document, called a Driver Education Certificate of Completion (DEC-1), please contact our office at 434-975-9450.
Before making your request, please be sure to register here and complete the Teen Driver Parent Seminar.
Classroom Driver Education

Classroom Driver Education is offered at all Albemarle County High Schools as part of the Health II classroom course, which is taken in 10th grade. Students are encouraged to attend all sessions of the 36-hour driver education instruction. Driver Education is not included in the Virtual Health II course. Virtual Health II students may register for Summer Classroom Driver Education through the Open Doors website, or contact Ms. Karen Waters for information regarding online options. Driver Education is administered by Karen Waters, Director of Community Education.
For more information, contact the Office of Community Education at 434-975-9450, or visit our Open Doors site and click on Driver Education.
Parent Seminars
Teen Driver Parent Seminars are offered virtually (via Zoom) on a monthly basis. Attendance of this 90-minute informational training session by a parent or guardian is mandated by the DMV in order to complete the Driver Education requirement for licensure under the age of 18. Topics covered include Virginia traffic law, licensing, coaching, and insuring teen drivers.
