NEWS RELEASE
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia)—Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) recently announced a significant step in construction of the new Mountain View Upper Elementary School. Following the receipt of competitive bids on October 24, the project will move forward with Nielsen Builders, Inc., based in Harrisonburg, VA, as the selected contractor. Nielsen Builders has a strong history of collaboration with ACPS and the Charlottesville community, including the award-winning Crozet Elementary School addition and renovation and ongoing projects such as the Charlottesville Middle School expansion.
The favorable bid results will allow ACPS to include several important additions to the project, such as:
- Three additional classrooms, ensuring the school can accommodate up to 500 students, addressing future enrollment needs;
- A second elevator, which was recommended by the ACPS Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee and the School Board, and will enhance accessibility and operational efficiency; and
- A photovoltaic system, which, combined with a geothermal HVAC system and other sustainable features, will make Mountain View Upper Elementary one of the most environmentally sustainable buildings in ACPS history.
These enhancements reflect priorities raised during extensive community engagement efforts, which also influenced key design features like abundant natural daylighting, bike and pedestrian connectivity, a state-of-the-art accessible playground, and a Grade 3-5 configuration.
Mountain View Elementary School principal Seth Kennard said of the new school and its potential impact: “The new Mountain View Upper Elementary School is a testament to the shared vision of our community, families and educators. It’s more than just a building—it’s a space where students will learn, grow and thrive for years to come. We are grateful for the collaborative efforts that have brought us to this milestone and look forward to the opportunities this new school will provide.”
Construction is expected to begin in early 2025, following some initial site mobilization later this month. A groundbreaking ceremony is currently being planned, with details to be announced soon. The construction timeline anticipates a completion date for the 2026-27 school year.
The new Mountain View Upper Elementary School is designed to serve as a valuable educational resource for decades to come, supporting students, families, and the community at large.
