Haas Resigns From ACPS Superintendent Position

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — The Albemarle County School Board and Matthew Haas have agreed to terms of his resignation. Haas’s separation from Albemarle County Public Schools is effective immediately.

Severance pay and benefits available in the event of resignation or termination without cause under the employment agreement will be provided. Specifically, Haas will continue to receive his regular pay and current benefits through June 2027. As previously agreed to by the school board and former superintendent, the base pay will increase 3.75% to $257,165.67 from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, and an $800 bonus will be paid in June 2026.

“We appreciate the years of service and dedication Dr. Haas provided to Albemarle County throughout his career, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said Rebecca Berlin, school board chair.

On June 17, 2026, the school board announced Chandra Hayes as the acting superintendent through June 30, 2027, as the board takes time to receive community feedback and conduct a nationwide search to permanently fill the position.
