ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — When Albemarle High School senior Anya Piskunova learned she had been accepted into Virginia National Bank’s 2026 Finance Career and Leadership Academy, she felt as if a door had been opened for her.

“Being accepted into the Academy feels amazing,” Piskunova said. “Now, the future feels wider and brighter. I feel seen, chosen, and ready for what lies ahead.”

Piskunova is one of four Albemarle County Public Schools students selected for the 2026 Finance Career and Leadership Academy, a selective program for high school juniors and seniors focused on careers in finance, leadership and professional development.

In addition to Piskunova, Albemarle High School’s Emma Lau, Western Albemarle’s Olivia Moore and Monticello’s Skye Cuellar were also selected to attend the Academy.

The Academy is a free, in-person instructional program designed to provide advanced personal finance education, employment readiness training and early exposure to careers in banking. Through a partnership with the Center for Financial Training and Education Alliance, the program also introduces students to industry-aligned coursework and credentialing opportunities related to the financial services field.

Students who excel in the Academy may be considered for additional training or career development opportunities with Virginia National Bank after graduation.

“Each year, we are continually inspired by the growing number of highly talented and motivated students applying to our program,” said Glenn Rust, president and CEO of Virginia National Bankshares Corporation and Virginia National Bank. “This year’s winners truly stand out for their dedication to advancing their financial education and making a positive impact in their communities.”

To be considered for the Academy, high school juniors and seniors interested in finance, business or leadership had to apply directly through the bank. Applicants were evaluated based on academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, community service and overall character. The selection process also included a written essay and an interview.

“I’ve always been interested in the economy and investing and watching the trends,” Cuellar, a junior, said. “There’s always something to learn about finance, so I hope the Academy will give me foundational skills I can build on in the future.”

Participation in the Academy is intended to help students better understand the range of careers available within finance and related fields, while building professional skills that support postsecondary goals. Programs like the Finance Career and Leadership Academy align with ACPS’ focus on preparing students for success beyond graduation.

“I hope to learn more about money management and investments,” Piskunova said. “I’m also looking forward to learning practical job skills, how to highlight my strengths, and understand what employers are looking for in a job applicant. Overall, I hope to build my professional skills, prepare for a good job, and learn how to make smart choices with my money.”
