ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — Thanks to the generosity of a local donor through the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, more than 540 Albemarle County Public Schools families received much-needed support this holiday season. The Albemarle Foundation for Education (AFE) was honored to distribute $100 grocery store gift cards to families across the division to help ease financial stress and support food security.
The largest distribution took place during the Winter Mobile Markets on December 10, 2025, which drew nearly 200 families. With the help of the Communities in Schools (CIS) program, school staff and several other community partners, families received fresh produce, pantry items and financial support through grocery store gift cards to purchase food tailored to their household needs.
In addition to the grocery store gift cards, AFE also provided restaurant gift cards to families without access to kitchen facilities. These cards ensure families can access prepared meals without concerns about food storage or cooking arrangements. This small but meaningful adjustment reflects AFE’s commitment to understanding and meeting the diverse needs of Albemarle County families.
School counselors, family support workers and CIS site coordinators distributed remaining gift cards to families who were unable to attend the December 10 Winter Mobile Market. By leveraging trusted, school-based relationships, AFE ensured the support was delivered thoughtfully and equitably.
AFE expressed its deep gratitude for the donor whose generosity made this initiative possible.
“We are continually inspired by the kindness of our community,” said AFE Executive Director Atalaya Sergi. “This gift allowed us to stand alongside families, especially during a time of year that can be both joyful and challenging. We are honored to help strengthen our families and support our students.”
The foundation remains committed to supporting Albemarle County Public Schools students and families year-round. From food security efforts to educational support, AFE works closely with schools and community partners to address barriers to learning and help ensure all students thrive.
