Albemarle County School Board releases plan to fill at-large vacancy

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — The Albemarle County School Board has established a public process to fill the at-large seat vacated following Allison Spillman’s resignation Aug. 13. Candidate interviews are scheduled for Sept. 10, followed by a public hearing for community feedback on Sept. 17. The board plans to appoint a new member on Sept. 24. All candidate applications are available on the School Board website.

Interviews will take place in person in Lane Auditorium at the Albemarle County Office Building, 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville. The interview order will be determined by random draw, and candidates must remain in the auditorium throughout the process. Each candidate will have a 12-minute time limit to make an opening statement and respond to the same three questions. All candidates were provided the questions simultaneously and in advance to ensure a level playing field.

While the proceedings remain open to the public so community members can observe the prospective board members, there will be no public comment period during the Sept. 10 meeting. The public will have the opportunity to share input on the candidates during a public hearing on Sept. 17.

After considering the candidates’ responses and public feedback, the board will decide whom to appoint to fill the seat. The appointment requires a majority vote of the board in open session.

The selected candidate will fill the remainder of the current at-large term, which runs through Dec. 31, 2027.
