Albemarle County School Board Adopts 2025-26 Budget to Sustain Excellence for Students, Staff, and Schools

NEWS RELEASE

(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia)—The Albemarle County School Board has officially adopted the division’s budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, a plan that prioritizes investments in students, staff, and academic programs while reflecting strong community partnership. With an additional $14 million in funding from Albemarle County and making budget cuts of $7 million, the school division was able to balance its $284 million operating budget. The new budget will take effect on July 1, 2025.

The approved budget introduces several important initiatives designed to strengthen academic achievement, student well-being, and the overall learning environment. Among the highlights are:

  • Stabilizing existing programs and expanding academic programs that support accelerated learning and career readiness pathways across all grade levels.
  • Enhanced literacy and math intervention tools to support academic growth and close learning gaps.
  • Investments in school safety and security, including the addition of two School Resource Officers to ensure coverage at all three comprehensive high schools.
  • Expanded special education services to support students with the most intensive needs.

While these initiatives represent exciting opportunities for students and staff, the largest share of the budget will continue to be driven by core operational costs. These include competitive compensation and benefits for teachers and staff, as well as rising expenses related to health insurance, transportation, and facility maintenance—all essential to delivering a high-quality, equitable education for every student in Albemarle County.

In recognition of the division’s responsibility to steward resources wisely, the position currently held by Dr. Clare Keiser, Assistant Superintendent for Organizational Development, will be eliminated following her retirement on June 30. This reorganization results in significant cost savings that will support other division priorities in the coming year.

Dr. Keiser’s long and distinguished service has been instrumental in advancing initiatives that support both employee success and student achievement. Effective July 1, Dan Redding, currently Executive Director of Human Resources, will assume the role of Chief of Human Resources. The division extends its deep appreciation for Dr. Keiser’s many contributions and welcomes Mr. Redding to this important leadership role.

“We are grateful to Albemarle County for its continued partnership and commitment to our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Matthew Haas. “The county’s support was essential in closing the budget gap and ensuring we can move forward with the programs and resources our students and staff need to thrive. As we look ahead, we are also thankful for Dr. Keiser’s many years of dedicated leadership and excited to welcome Dan Redding to this important role.”

The 2025-26 budget reflects Albemarle County Public Schools’ mission to empower lifelong learners and uphold excellence, equity, and opportunity in every classroom. For more details, please visit the division’s 2025-26 Budget Development web page.
