NEWS RELEASE
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia)—Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) has opened a 30-day public review period for two proposed math curricula: one for elementary students in grades K-5 and one for secondary students in grades 6-12. Community members are encouraged to review the materials and share feedback before the School Board considers the programs for formal adoption.
The recommended program for elementary students (K-5) is Kiddom, while Savvas enVision Virginia is the proposed curriculum for secondary students (6-12). Both programs were selected through a rigorous review process led by committees of teachers, specialists, school leaders, and family members. Committee members evaluated several options, gathered school-based feedback, and identified the programs best aligned with instructional needs and Virginia’s new math standards.
Kiddom features hands-on and student-centered lessons that emphasize conceptual understanding. Teachers praised the platform’s ease of use and flexibility, and families will benefit from caregiver-friendly tools such as bilingual resources, a podcast designed to explain concepts, and FAQs for each unit. The program also includes built-in supports for English learners and students with diverse academic needs.
Savvas enVision Virginia was selected for its strong alignment with the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning and its comprehensive blend of print and digital resources. The curriculum includes customizable lessons, real-world problem-solving activities, and multiple tools to support differentiation. Students and families can access textbooks and digital content at home, with additional resources to support learners at all levels.
“Our goal throughout this adoption process has been to select high-quality resources that support both student understanding and teacher success,” said Dr. Chandra Hayes, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. “These recommended programs offer engaging, flexible, and inclusive tools that reflect our division’s commitment to excellence in math instruction. We are grateful to the educators, families, and community members who have contributed their time and insights, and we look forward to hearing from even more voices during the public review period.”
Sample materials for both programs are available for review at the ACPS Central Office, located at 401 McIntire Road in Charlottesville, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on school holidays. Families will also receive an invitation via email to review digital materials and submit feedback online. All feedback collected during the review period will be reviewed by the curriculum adoption committees and used to inform the School Board’s final decision.
