Dear Albemarle County Public Schools Community,
At Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS), we are dedicated to creating safe, inclusive, and welcoming spaces where every student, staff member, and family can succeed. Our policies on anti-racism, equity education, nondiscrimination, and equal opportunities guide our efforts to build a sense of belonging, safety, and well-being for all.
Recent events have highlighted the importance of standing together against bullying, harassment, and discrimination. Regular school attendance helps students feel included, ensures equal access to education, and supports their academic and emotional well-being.
Policies to Support Students
We strive to create a school culture where every student feels valued and respected. Our policies address challenges such as racial incidents, microaggressions, Islamophobia, and issues affecting LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities. We are committed to addressing these issues with empathy, consistency, and transparency.
Key division policies include:
- Policy AC: Nondiscrimination
- Policy ACC: Anti-Racism
- Policy AE: School Division Goals and Objectives
- Policy IGAK: Equity Education
- Policy JB: Equal Educational Opportunities
- Policy JBA: Policy on the Treatment of Transgender and Gender-Expansive Students
In accordance with these policies, ACPS actively addresses reports of bullying, harassment, and discrimination and is dedicated to responding to these incidents with empathy, transparency, and consistency.
Resources for a Safe Environment
ACPS provides resources and guidance to school staff to ensure effective responses to bullying, harassment, and discrimination. We are committed to supporting principals and school staff to align with our division’s policies and procedures.
How You Can Stay Involved
You play a vital role in supporting a safe and inclusive environment. Here are ways to stay engaged:
- Communicate with School Leaders: Share concerns or feedback with your child’s school administration.
- Stay Informed: Visit our For Families page for updates and resources.
- Attend School Events: Participate in school activities to connect with the community and celebrate diversity.
- Join Parent Groups: Collaborate with others through your school’s PTO or Family Council.
- Partner with Teachers: Build strong relationships with teachers to support your child’s growth.
Protecting Immigrant Families and Privacy
We want to reassure all families that our schools are safe and welcoming spaces for everyone. To learn more, you can read our superintendent’s recent statement addressing concerns about immigration enforcement activities and their potential impact on our schools.
Here are some key points about how we protect immigrant families and student privacy:
- No Questions About Immigration Status: ACPS does not—and is not permitted by law to—ask students or families about their immigration status.
- Safe Spaces: Students and families will not be questioned, detained, or taken into custody on ACPS premises unless law enforcement presents a valid warrant for criminal charges. We also consider bus stops to be part of our broader school community, where every student and family should feel safe and supported.
- Privacy Protection: Education records are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and are not shared with government agencies unless a valid judicial warrant or subpoena is presented.
- Role of School Resource Officers: School Resource Officers only engage with law enforcement when proper legal protocols are followed, and any such actions are communicated to school leadership.
Families with concerns about immigration enforcement near schools or bus stops are encouraged to contact us or trusted community partners. We are here to help and ensure every student feels safe and supported. For more information, visit our Immigration Resources page for guidance and support.
Our Commitment to Equity
We will continue working to create an inclusive, innovative, and caring learning environment. Together, we can ensure that every student, staff member, and family feels supported and empowered to succeed.
Thank you for your partnership. If you have questions or need support, please contact your child’s school, the International & English Learners Program, or the Office of Community Engagement.
Sincerely,
Dr. Daphne Keiser
Assistant Superintendent for School Community Engagement
