There's Still Time to Enroll in a Career Learning Community

Dear Ninth-Grade Families:

This is a reminder that there is still time for your freshman student to enroll in one of our new Career Learning Communities next year. Each Career Learning Community (CLC) is tied to a specific professional field or career cluster, allowing students to explore and further develop their career interests. This recent NBC29 Community Conversation highlights the benefits of this exciting opportunity.

Students enrolled in a CLC will continue to attend classes in their current school and participate in school activities. They will attend their Career Learning Community classes on alternate days, which could be at their school or at another school location. (Transportation is provided.)

The information below may be helpful, and you can also visit the Career Learning Communities of Albemarle section of our High School Redesign web page for more details.

Students who are interested in enrolling in a Career Learning Community and those who would like to know more about the benefits should reach out to their school counselor at their earliest opportunity.

Research shows that students are more engaged with school and learning when their interests are personally relevant. We encourage you to use the information below to talk with your student about the option of enrolling in a Career Learning Community.

How can my student sign up?

  1. Review our Career Learning Communities guide for students and families and slide presentation, which provide an overview of the purpose, goals and options available to students. Also, our online High School Program of Studies is an interactive guide that includes an index of all our high school course offerings.
  2. Use the following resources to explore pathways aligned to your child’s interests, strengths and goals:
  3. Identify a Career Learning Community of interest and register for the Gateway course. Our list of Gateway Courses provides a description of introductory courses aligned to each CLC.

When can my student sign up?

  • From December 5 – January 3, students and families were able to select the classes of their choice, including core, elective and CLC offerings, through the Parent Portal or Student Portal.
  • From January 3 – February 24, counselors will meet with students and families to discuss course requests.
  • All class selections and changes must be made by the last Friday in March (March 31). After this point, students who are interested in enrolling in a CLC will be added to a waitlist.

Please reach out to your school counselor with any questions.
