Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) invites you to attend a virtual community information forum focused on special education on Wednesday, January 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. You can join this forum, hosted by the ACPS Office of Community Engagement, by clicking on the following Zoom link:

A panel of school division and higher education experts, along with community partners, will discuss current special education trends, best practices, and programming. Among specific areas that will be addressed are the school division’s special education programs; inclusive instructional practices; special education staffing; support provided from higher education and community partners; and information on how to access family resources. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions through Zoom’s Q&A feature.

Panelists will include:

  • Dr. Lysandra Cook, Associate Professor and Special Education Program Coordinator for Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education, UVA
  • Dr. Mandy Rispoli, Board Certified Behavior Analyst; Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions; and Quantitative Foundation Bicentennial Professor, UVA
  • Dr. Jill Shifflet, Education Coordinator, Virginia Department of Education, Region 5 Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC), JMU
  • Dr. Jarrod Hobson, Education Coordinator, Virginia Department of Education, Region 5 Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC), JMU
  • Dr. Kevin Kirst, Executive Director of Special Education and Student Services, ACPS
  • Ms. Katy Compel, Director of Special Education, ACPS
  • Ms. Christine Thomas, Lead Special Education Teacher, Journey Middle School, ACPS
  • Mr. Michael Armstrong, Parent Resource Center Facilitator, ACPS
  • Ms. Stephanie Hicks, Parent Resource Center Coordinator, Piedmont Regional Education Program (PREP)

Superintendent Dr. Matthew Haas will open the session, and Dr. Daphne Keiser, Assistant Superintendent for School Community Engagement, will moderate the discussion.

The forum will be recorded and posted on the division’s YouTube channel for anyone who is interested but cannot attend on the 25th.
