Message from the Superintendent
Dear Families and Staff,
Earlier today, the Albemarle County Police Department announced the arrest of a 5th grade teacher at Woodbrook Elementary School. The individual has been charged with felony offenses related to child pornography.
This news is deeply troubling. I know it may raise questions and concerns across our school community. The investigation is ongoing, and Albemarle County Public Schools is cooperating fully with law enforcement.
The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority. All teachers in Albemarle County Public Schools undergo required background checks prior to employment. This includes a Virginia State Police criminal history check and a Central Registry search for child abuse and neglect. This teacher completed all required background screenings prior to employment.
We recognize the impact that situations like this can have on students, families, and staff. Counselors and support staff are available at Woodbrook Elementary School and at all of our schools. We will continue to support our students and staff with care and compassion during this time.
If you have information that may be relevant to this investigation, please contact the Albemarle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 434-296-5807 or Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000.
We will share additional information as it becomes available and as appropriate.
Sincerely,
Dr. Matthew S. Haas
Superintendent
