Additional Changes to the 2021-22 Calendar

Dear Students, Families & Employees:

At their meeting last night, the Albemarle County School Board approved a change to the 2021-22 school year calendar in response to the number of school closures we’ve had due to adverse weather.

Virginia school divisions are required to provide at least 990 instructional hours each school year. The number of school closures we’ve had this winter has reduced our ability to meet this requirement. Last night, our board decided to restore Friday, May 20, as a full day of instruction for students. May 20 will no longer be a teacher workday.

Additionally, if we miss another day of school, Friday, March 18 (now a teacher workday), will automatically become a full day of school for students. Should weather cause us to miss more days in the future, we will explore other options in order to make up the lost instructional time.

Our revised school calendar is available to view and print on our Calendars web page.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that the school division will consider moving to virtual learning during extended school closures in the future. If schools close and it looks likely that weather conditions will cause us to close our buildings for multiple days, ACPS will evaluate several factors to determine if it is possible to hold classes virtually. Such a decision would not take effect until at least the second day of an extended closure. For more information about this decision-making process and what to expect on a virtual learning day, please visit our new web page, Virtual Learning on Inclement Weather Days.

Thank you, and we wish you all a wonderful weekend.
