Survey Open: November 14 to November 21

In this survey, we asked respondents to choose from among five possible school names. The survey showed that 354 respondents prefer the name Meriwether Lewis Elementary School. From highest to lowest rank, Ivy Elementary received the second highest number of votes, followed by Owensville Elementary, Discovery/Expedition/Explorer Elementary and Blue Bird Elementary.

Survey open from October 24 to November 2

In this survey, we asked the Meriwether Lewis Elementary School community to share their opinions and ideas with us regarding the school name review process. In this survey, respondents offered suggestions on possible names for the school.

Survey Open: May 16, 2022 - June 10, 2022

A working group of high school administrators was convened to consider the possibility of adapting the "Away for the Day" cell phone policy currently in middle schools for adoption in high schools. The survey, which received 1,447 responses, presented the draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and requested feedback from respondents about their concerns and questions. The results of the survey are summarized here and were presented to the working group who incorporated some of the suggestions as edits to the SOP.

Members of the Mary Carr Greer Elementary School community were asked to take a second survey seeking their perspectives on potential names for the school as part of the Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) naming review process.

Survey Open: January 31 - February 18

This student survey covered four broad topics: student wellbeing, student feedback for a 7+1 schedule for high school, grading practices and the homework policy. Schools provided time during advisory periods for students to complete the survey, and we received 4,522 responses.

Survey Open: March 2, 2022, to April 22, 2022

The Panorama Climate Survey is used to measure our Tier I interventions and the effectiveness of current practices in creating a positive school environment for our students. Panorama climate survey will focus on the following five to six topics; (1) sense of belonging, (2) school safety; (3) value of school, (4) rigorous expectations, (5) school climate, and (6) cultural awareness. Secondary students will complete all six topics and elementary schools will only be completing topics one through five. The topic of cultural awareness is only administered to secondary students. In transitioning to Panorama surveys, we have access to nationally normed data and Albemarle County Public Schools will be able to compare this data to other schools districts similar to ACPS. This survey will be administered in 3rd through 12th grades.

After creating a list of proposed budget recommendations to support the goals and objectives of our new strategic plan, Learning for All, ACPS invited students, employees, families, and community members to review those recommendations and help us determine which priorities our 2022-23 budget should support.

The Calendar Committee asked the Albemarle County Public School community to review the draft 2022-23 school year calendar and provide feedback.

Survey Open: October 28 – November 18, 2021

This survey solicited name recommendations and allowed participants to nominate the existing school name. There was an electronic survey that received 171 responses. Students were also given an opportunity to participate in class. Their responses have been included with the online survey results.

Survey open: July 29 to August 10, 2021

APCS hosted free summer programming for students in the summer of 2021. Students were invited to attend at least one week, with academics in the morning and more experiential and activity based work in the afternoons. This survey was sent to parents of all students who participated in the program to solicit their feedback.

The Murray Community Advisory Committee launched the School Naming Review Survey to receive stakeholder opinions on the renaming of Virginia L. Murray Elementary School. In total, 458 responses were tallied.

Survey closed: December 18, 2020 

In order to prepare for the increases the number of students who will be invited into our schools if a move to Stage 4 would be recommended to and approved by the School Board, the Division asked families to indicate whether or not their child would be returning to in-person instruction.

Preparing for this change while still enforcing our health protection strategies and practices requires an extensive amount of planning, beginning with staff assignments and including how we will use space in our schools and transport students to school. The Stage 4 Intent Form was the tool used to gather an accurate idea of how many families and staff will choose to return to school in Stage 4.

Albemarle County Public Schools surveyed the community about its Portrait of a Graduate, which is meant to be a collective vision that articulates our entire community’s aspirations for all of our students. The department strove to develop the Portrait based on a local perspective, but with an eye toward the globalized society in which our students will live and work in the future.

The Albemarle County School Board reviewed the role of police officers who are assigned to our high schools and who rotate coverage in our middle schools. Students and parents were asked to offer their opinions about School Resource Officers and their impact in our schools.

Teacher Survey Open: October 23 – November 23, 2018

Albemarle County Public Schools introduced Freshman Seminar, an advisory period focused on relationship building and meeting the social-emotional and career development needs of students, in the 2018-19 school year. Two months into the initiative, the division surveyed Freshman Seminar teachers to collect feedback on implementation and identify areas for improvement. Then, in the final quarter of the school year, the division surveyed Freshman Seminar students to evaluate the opportunities provided by the course to develop students’ academic, interpersonal and emotional skills.

Survey Open: March 26 - April 7, 2019

The ACPS Extended Day Enrichment Program (EDEP) offers after-school programs at all elementary schools and serves approximately 1,000 students. Space is limited in EDEP; therefore, the division solicited input from our elementary school families on the registration process for the 2019-20 school year. We received 583 responses with representation from all 15 of our elementary schools from current program participants as well as non-participants. Based on the feedback, we will be focusing on improvements to the timing of registration, the online EDEP registration system, and communications around registration. We also will consider the recommendations we received regarding alternative registration procedures.

Survey Open: January 22 - February 1, 2019

The Bell Schedule Survey collected opinions from high school students, parents and employees about our current high school schedules, as part of the division's ongoing effort to offer the broadest possible range of learning experiences for students. Survey results provided helpful guidance around whether students should have 7 or 8 academic classes in an 8-period day; the role of the anchor day; and whether to use a fixed, rotational or hybrid schedule.

Survey Open: December 1-7, 2018

The division's middle school students participated in a survey about career interests, based on the Virginia Department of Education’s Career Clusters model. The clusters help students explore their early career interests and identify courses of study that align with those interests. Feedback from this survey will help the division plan courses and programs at our high schools, CATEC, and future student centers and academies.

Survey Open: September 19 - October 5, 2018

Following 16 listening tour sessions in which nearly 400 students, parents, employees, and community members shared their insights, Superintendent Matt Haas launched a survey to make sure that his understanding of the school division's needs and how well those needs are being met aligned with the feedback he received through his listening tour. He also was interested to see if that feedback accurately represented the beliefs of the school community as a whole. Survey feedback is intended to help Dr. Haas prioritize his work as the newest superintendent of Albemarle County Public Schools.

Survey Open: September 6-21, 2018

The primary reason for the Driver Education Survey was to try to uncover what, if any, barriers deter students from accessing the Behind-the-Wheel component of the ACPS Driver Education program. The survey was offered to both students and parents.

Survey Open: March 20 - June 8, 2018

One of the four guiding principles of the High School 2022 theoretical framework is to ensure the use of fair, meaningful and equitable grading practices. To confirm that this guiding principle is in place in our schools, division leaders undertook a study of grading practices during the 2017-18 school year. This work included a survey of all teachers in grades 4-12 on their grading practices and beliefs. The results of this survey provided details on the current state of our grading practices, and in 2018-19, staff will use this data to help determine next steps as our division seeks to improve student learning through the use of fair and equitable grading practices.

The 2018-19 Budget Survey was designed to help the school division understand how well we have communicated the annual budget process to our community and to determine the degree to which our community members support various system initiatives. The input that we collected was used to inform the 2018-19 budget development process, including both the Superintendent's and School Board's funding requests.

Survey Open: September - December 2017

Collective efficacy (the shared perceptions of teachers in a school that the efforts of the faculty as a whole will have positive effects on students) is a focus for our work across the school division. In the fall of 2017, 1,344 Albemarle educators (99.6% of ACPS teachers) participated in the Collective Efficacy survey, which was reproduced from Jenni Donohoo’s book, Collective Efficacy: How Educators′ Beliefs Impact Student Learning (2016). The survey asked teachers to indicate their level of agreement with 18 statements representing six characteristics of Collective Efficacy, including Advanced Teacher Influence; Goal Consensus; Teachers’ Knowledge About One Another’s Work; Cohesive Staff; Responsiveness of Leadership; and Effective Systems of Intervention.

Following a change to our homework policy and a program evaluation of our Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes, we conducted the Weighted Grades survey as part of an effort to improve the health and welfare of our students and to facilitate students' choice of classes based on their personal interest and career aspirations.

Survey Open: April 20 - May 4, 2017

As part of a comprehensive review of our homework policy, a committee of administrators, teachers, and counselors engaged in research and study, met with several internal and external advisory groups, and evaluated survey feedback provided in 2015 by more than 2,100 parents and students and 275 teachers. The committee then drafted new homework guidelines with a focus on the purpose, quality and quantity of the work assigned, and with an emphasis on student health. In May 2016, the school board approved amendments to Policy IKB, our homework policy, with the expectation that teachers would incorporate the changes in the 2016-17 school year. This most recent homework survey was conducted in order to evaluate implementation of the new policy.

As part of a comprehensive evaluation of the high school experience, the school division invited parents of high school students to provide input regarding their child's experience with Advanced Placement (AP) and/or Dual Enrollment (DE) classes, including their child's motivation for taking AP or DE classes, the value of the coursework, and the variety of available courses.
