Albemarle County's Linguistic Diversity

Albemarle County Public Schools is home to students who speak 81 languages and originate from 96 different countries. In the last two decades, the number of multilingual students in our schools has tripled. Most of our English Learners (ELs) speak Spanish and come from Latin America, but approximately 40 percent speak other languages and come from regions as diverse as North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Europe, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and East Asia.

Our international and multilingual families bring our school division the capacity to advance 21st century learning skills by allowing all students to communicate across languages and cultures, to connect with a global community and economy, and to contribute to the continuing development of a rich tapestry of cultural diversity that is the civic, social, and economic foundation of our region and country.
