Educator Performance Appraisal
EPA Overview
"What teachers know and can do makes the most difference in what children learn." Linda Darling-Hammond
Our Vision for the EPA
The role that educators play in the growth and development of students is paramount. Because educators are so fundamentally important to school improvement and student success, focusing on instructional quality, professional standards, reflection and feedback enables educators and leaders to recognize, appreciate, value, and develop excellent teaching.
The Albemarle County Public Schools Educator Performance Appraisal (EPA) is grounded in the work of the Division - our levers of anti-racism and equity, our Framework for Quality Learning (FQL), our work with colleagues through Professional Learning Communities (PLC), and through practices in alignment with our Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) model focusing on our commitment to become culturally responsive educators.
This performance appraisal process and system is designed to provide opportunities for educators to grow and develop in their professional practice - whether a novice or more experienced educator. Through goal setting around student achievement and professional development, observation, reflective conversations about professional practice with colleagues, feedback from students, and ongoing conversations with principals, the EPA is intended to provide meaningful feedback and growth opportunities.

Student Surveys |
Educators will provide student surveys three times during the year. They will analyze data, and reflect with a peer on the feedback, setting related goals. The evaluator may ask the educator to reflect with the survey results. * While Student Surveys are required twice a year, they may be completed more frequently. |

EPA Toolkit
Resource | Description |
EPA Framework | This document gives an overview of the Educator Performance Appraisal (EPA). |
Performance Standards with Indicators and Scoring Rubrics | The eight performance standards are listed here, along with examples of indicators for each standard. The indicators are not intended to be a checklist, nor all inclusive. The rubric provides a definition and ratings. |
EPA Timeline | The timeline for each activity associated with the EPA is listed, along with the person who is responsible for initiating that activity. |
Goals Setting Goal Development Worksheet - Data-driven Student Performance Goal |
Each educator is required to develop and work toward two specific goals. One is related to student performance and the other is based on professional growth. The Goal Development Worksheets should be used to help guide and determine the goals. All goals should be completed using the SMART format. Once the worksheet is completed, all educators will transfer their goals into Unified Talent Perform and will have opportunities to reflect on goal progress throughout the school year. |
Documentation Log |
The Documentation Log is required for all educators in their evaluation year. The cover sheet allows for you to link artifacts and evidence of progress towards meeting the SMART goals, as well as an opportunity for reflection. Examples of documentation are provided in the second link. The examples provided are inclusive of all possible items to include in the Documentation Log. |
Evaluation Forms Novice Evaluation Form |
Evaluation forms are uploaded into Unified Talent Perform. Your evaluation form starts with the determination of your goals, allows for mid- and end-of-year reflection, and provides the overall rating for those in their evaluation year. The form will be shared back and forth between the educator and their evaluator throughout the school year, and will be signed once the appraisal process is completed. Those in their non-evaluation year will use the form for goals and reflection. |
Student Surveys |
Student surveys are to be given in each semester. The information that students provide will give each educator an opportunity to reflect on the perceptions of their students and make shifts in practice to ensure that the needs of all students are being met. |
Educator Self-Assessment |
The self-assessment allows each educator to reflect on their practice as related to each performance standard. Your self-assessment form will not be submitted as part of the evidence related to the EPA progress, but you may be asked to reflect on your practice during meetings with your evaluator. |
Formal Observation Form | All educators in their evaluation year will have two formal observations each year. This is the form where that observation will be documented. It will be completed by the evaluator and discussed with the educator. |
Learning Walk Template | Learning Walks are one form of information observation that is used throughout ACPS. The Learning Walk tool focuses on both the work of the educator in their classroom as well as the work of their PLC. Each teacher will have 5 Learning Walks completed each semester by the evaluator. |
PLC Audit Tool Response to Student Feedback Form IC/LTI/ES Observation/Feedback Tool Reflective Questions for Peer Observation |
These tools align with the choice educators have in using the Professional Reflection Activity. Educators will work primarily with Instructional Coaches, Learning Technology Integrators, and Equity Specialists through the Professional Reflection Activity of their choice. Please note that the Peer Observation activity must be pre-approved by the evaluator. |
Virginia Department of Education through the Guidelines for Uniform Performance Standards and Evaluation Criteria for Educators | This document is the guidance around educator performance evaluation from the Virginia Department of Education. This version was approved by the Virginia Board of Education 3/18/2020. |
