2017-18 Budget Development

Under the umbrella of our strategic plan, we move toward 2017-18 with a focus on equity and access as a means to help each student reach full potential. Aligned with this focus, we will strive to maintain not only our competitive salaries and benefits, but also the levels of service to which our students and families are accustomed.

Budget Development Process

The development cycle for the 2017-18 budget began in August 2016 and ends in April 2017. The process includes gathering input from numerous stakeholder groups in the school system and community.

The Superintendent, taking into consideration stakeholder feedback, forms a Funding Request that is presented to the School Board (Jan. 19, 2017). The School Board reviews the Superintendent's Funding Request during a series of budget work sessions and a public hearing and then makes its own adjustments to the spending plan.

Finally, a School Board Funding Request is presented to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors (Feb. 27, 2017), who make the final decision regarding the amount of revenue to be allocated to the school division.

Note: A complete archive of relevant budget documents, reports and presentations is maintained on the Historical Budget Documents web page.

Budget Meetings

Budget Preparation Calendar

We encourage Albemarle County students, parents, employees, and community members to participate in the budget development process by attending School Board meetings. Public comment is accepted during Regular School Board Meetings and Regular Work Sessions. Special Work Sessions are open to the public; however, they do not offer the opportunity for public comment. Review the guidelines regarding public comment »

Unless otherwise noted, all meetings take place in the Albemarle County Office Building at 401 McIntire Road in Charlottesville.

Key Advisory Groups

Stakeholder feedback is an essential part of the budget process. In addition to community feedback received through online surveys and town hall meetings, multiple advisory groups provide budget input. Learn more about our key advisory groups »

Community Outreach Survey

Thank you for your feedback!

From November 16-27, 2016, we received 1,119 responses to our Community Outreach Survey from ACPS students, parents, employees, and community members.

Our goal in administering this survey was to provide, define, and give examples of research-based elements of effective schools and ask our stakeholders to rank them in order of our effectiveness, and in so doing, provide an opportunity for community input to assist the Superintendent and School Board in developing a funding request for 2017-18.
