Integrated Pest Management

Integrated Pest Management

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a way to reduce pesticide use while maintaining pest control.  IPM takes a reduced toxicity approach to pest control and employs a variety of pest prevention methods instead of relying on pesticides alone.

Agnor-Hurt Elementary School was chosen to be the first IPM Pilot School in May 2007.  Agnor-Hurt and Building Services staff have worked to reduce pest access to the building.  Chemical control methods are still used if non-chemical means fail, but only on an "as needed basis".  When chemical control methods are necessary, only the least toxic, most effective products are used.

IPM Schedule

Additional schools are converting to an IPM program at the rate of two schools per month. Physical barriers around the perimeter of the schools will be evaluated before each school formally converts to an IPM program. View the IPM Rollout Schedule for ACPS.

Pest Identification for Staff and Teachers

After a school has converted to an IPM program, it is critical to the success of the program that each pest sighting is recorded in the IPM Log Book in the front office.  This will help the IPM technician identify pest issues before they become major problems.  Please report any building structural deficiencies (e.g., small holes, insufficient weatherstripping, etc.) to Building Services at 975-9340.

For ant identification, please refer to University of California's IPM website.
