Farm to School Week 2012
Albemarle County Public Schools participated in the 4th annual Virginia Farm to School Week this year during the second and third week of November.
Throughout this week, school cafeterias incorporate locally grown food into their menus to encourage healthy eating and to strengthen the ties between schools and local farms.
To further demonstrate the benefits of eating local, guests visited ACPS schools. Guests included farmers and staff from Carter's Mountain Orchard, The Farm at Red Hill, and Liberity Mills Farm. Additionally, a couple of ACPS energy and environmental compliance interns helped facilitated the events.
Thanks to visiting farmers, students were able to sample fresh apples, cider, humms, and brococoli. Students have always been excited to interact with the guests and try the samples, and comment that the fresh, local foods tasted better than store-bought. Looks like we may have some locavores on our hands!
