Program and Mission

Vision

To empower multilingual and multicultural students to succeed academically, civically, socially, and economically in a global community through a rigorous curriculum and engaging pedagogy.

Mission

In order to advance the education of students who are acquiring English as an additional language, educators, families, and community members will collaborate to ensure the well-being and learning of linguistically diverse students. The ESOL program will build on the diverse resources of English Learners (ELs) in Albemarle County Public Schools by engaging them in rigorous learning experiences that prepare students to:

  • collaborate across linguistic and cultural differences;
  • engage in higher-level, critical-thinking skills;
  • create innovative solutions to problems; and
  • succeed as civically, socially, and economically as members of their multilingual communities.

Standards

The state of Virginia uses the WIDA Standards of English Language Development to assess and inform the instruction of students who are learning English in addition to their home languages. Albemarle County Public Schools uses these standards to determine levels of support in the ESOL program, as well as annual progress in English proficiency with the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 test given in the Spring.
