The following Board Priorities were approved at a Special Board Meeting on July 25, 2013. They reflect continued commitment to preparing each and every student for the future.  These priorities are the foundation of our Division Strategic Improvement Plan and are continuously reviewed and updated to support the achievement of the Division's Goal and Objectives.

The following status update was provided to the School Board in January 2015.

Engage Every Student

Priority 1.1 | Define, develop, and implement effective teaching practices that maximize rigor and meaningful engagement for all students.

The Division’s effective teaching practices have been defined and framed around the design concepts of the “Seven Pathways” [Maker-Infused Curriculum, Interactive Technologies, Choice and Comfort, Universal Design for Learning, Connectivity, Project-Problem-Passion-Based-Learning, and Instructional Tolerance] and the Framework for Quality Learning (FQL).

  • The Digital Learning Project (DLP) is the next important step to identify and create quality digital learning resources for our middle and high school students. The use of these resources will extend the continuum of learning opportuntiies available to students, providing learners with a variety of tools to accomplish their work.  As of December 2014 there were over 349 unique Blackboard Sections.  The project team is establishing maintenance / curation protocols for the DLP and will hold work sessions with teacher around using and contributing to DLP.

Priority 1.2 | Develop a division-wide master framework for contemporary professional development and training that optimizes our workforce and addresses the essential competencies needed by teachers, administrators, and classified staff. 

The Division-wide master framework for contemporary professional development is anchored by the Framework for Quality Learning (FQL), the Seven Pathways Design Concepts, and the Instructional Coaching Model. The Framework is aligned and supported by the Performance Appraisal System.

  • Both PD Workshop attendance and utilization of the Insteructional Coaching model have drastically increased. Pending the results of the Professional Development needs assessement and the Budget Request Division-wide training opportunities including CAI, Summer Professional Learning “ReBootEd”, and Making Connections will be aligned to meet those needs.

Priority 1.3 | Integrate the use of contemporary learning spaces and supportive technologies into the instructional program delivery.

Implement Balanced Assessments

Priority 2.1 | Define, communicate, and implement the Division's specific measures for mastery of lifelong-learning competencies and student success.

Annual, divisionlevel administration of ACPS Performance Tasks provides information on student development of the skills andunderstandings needed to be a Lifelong Learner across grade levels and content areas.  This element of student performance brings balance to the current ACPS assessment matrix and guarantees that all students are assessed on skills and understandings beyond the Virginia Standards of Learning by measuring ACPS Lifelong Learner Competencies.

  • The Performance Task Work Group are in process of developing School Level Reports by LLC and expanding the Performance Tasks Library.

Improve Opportunity & Achievement

Priority 3.1 | Prepare all students for successful transition to the next grade in their PK-12 experience.

  • Integrated team of school counselors, intervention specialists, and community engagement have been formed.  Work is in progress to establish standard tranisiton activities based on curent best practices.

Ensuring Successful Student Transitions from the Middle Grades to High School

Priority 3.2 | Implement a robust, Division-wide PK-12 World Languages Program.

  • Dual language program has been piloted at Cale Elementary School. Currently K-2 with expansion plans to 5th grade by the 2017-2018 SY.
  • School Board re-defined what constitued a "robust" program during the October Work Session as one that begins in preschool or kindergarten and continues through middle school using immersion programs whenever possible and supplementing with pull-out programs.

We will create and expand Partnerships

Priority 4.1 | Implement a comprehensive Work Based Learning (WBL) program and expand field trip opportunities to provide real-world learning experiences for all students' success.

  • Aligning ACPS Mentorship/Internship program with the VDOE Work Based Learning (WBL) program. New WBL website and training program for teachers & administrators in development.
  • Baseline Field Trip data has been collected.  An interdisciplinary team is being formed to analyze the Field Trip data to identify opportunities for improvement and to ensure parity across the Division.

Priority 4.2 | Invest the full community in supporting student achievement and outcomes for all students' success.

By improving communications and information flow accross the community we expect people to become mor interested in finding way that they can contribute to and support student achievement.

  • Climate Survey workgroup revising climate survey questions to capture key elements from Safe Schools Healthy Students grant.
  • Data collection initiated for current state of community partners within the School Division.

We will optimize resources

Priority 5.1 | Ensure the health and safety of the school community.

  • All schools had landscaping changes made to address visibility issues and the entrance security project have been started. 17/26 schools now have controlled entrances.

Priority 5.2 | Optimize the use of fiscal resources in support of the Division's strategic plan and operations.

  • Program evaluations will be conducted to determine actual costs and program efficacy. Continuing to refine fidelity measures for operational impact of Programs.

Priority 5.3 | Design the high school of the future.

Redefined High School of the Future design to be about identifying, piloting, and evaluating high quality practices that reflect a future vision of the high school experience. The High School Council identifies significant issues relevant to the high schools, and researches and make recommendations for potential systematic implementation

  • Piloting Alternate Culminating Assessments in High School for End of Course 2014-15. There are 206 courses included in this Pilot across the three comprehensive high schools.
