Two More Neighborhood Locations Added to School Division’s Student Meal Service Program, Now at 20 Locations

(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – Albemarle County Public Schools is adding two additional sites to its breakfast and lunch distribution program beginning Monday, April 6. The new locations are Broadus Wood Elementary School and the Four Seasons complex, in the lower parking lot parallel to Four Seasons Drive.

These new locations bring the number of sites to 20 where Albemarle County students and siblings are able to pick up “grab-and-go” breakfasts and lunches. Meals are available to all Albemarle County students or siblings ages 18 or younger, free of charge and regardless of family income. Meals can be picked up by a representative for the student.

The school division’s Chief Operating Officer, Rosalyn Schmitt, said the program currently is providing 1,100 meals a day to students. School buses are used to deliver the meals to all neighborhood sites.

“We would like to see this number of 1,100 meals each day continue to increase,” she said, adding that the Child Nutrition Program is constantly monitoring how many students are participating in the program. “We are asking families to contact us if they do not have transportation to one of our student meal service locations and we will continue to add sites as needed to meet demand,” Schmitt said. “I want to thank our bus drivers and our Child Nutrition staff for their dedication to providing two meals a day to as many children as possible,” she added.

Although schools were closed by Governor Ralph Northam in response to public meeting restrictions to contain and prevent COVID-19 illnesses, the meal program will continue through June 5 when the school year was to end. That includes meals being distributed next week, which is on the school calendar as spring break. The only weekday that meals will not be available is on the Memorial Day holiday, which is Monday, May 25.

The school division began offering meals to students at six school locations on Tuesday, March 17, and added 11 more sites throughout the county on Wednesday, March 25. Yancey Community Center was added on March 30.
