Albemarle County School Board to Host Three Virtual Town Halls for Parents, Students, Employees on COVID-19 and Back to School Plans for This Fall

(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – The Albemarle County School Board, in partnership with the Thomas Jefferson Health District, will hold online town halls this Thursday and Friday and next Monday to provide the latest COVID-19 information and to gain input from the school community about the reopening of schools in September.

The town halls will take place this Thursday afternoon at 12:30 p.m., on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., and next Monday evening at 6 p.m.

The Director of the Thomas Jefferson Health District, Dr. Denise Bonds, will open each meeting with an update of the latest developments around COVID-19 and take questions from the online audience. School Board members will review information about the various options for opening schools that are now under consideration and ask participants to share their ideas and views.

For Thursday’s 12:30 p.m. meeting, in addition to Dr. Bonds, Dr. Kate Acuff, who represents the Jack Jouett Magisterial District on the School Board, and School Board Chair Graham Paige, who represents the Samuel Miller District, will host. Katrina Callsen from the Rio District and Ellen Osborne from the Scottsville District will host the Friday afternoon meeting with Dr. Bonds at 2 p.m., and on Monday evening, Judy Le from the Rivanna District will be joined by Ms. Callsen and Dr. Bonds at 6 p.m.

The School Board is scheduled to consider several options for reopening schools during their meeting on July 30. These options range from instruction being delivered only online when schools reopen on September 8 to instructional models that combine both virtual and in-person learning. Information on the various options under consideration as well as on the various health and safety protections that will be in place this fall is posted and updated on a regular basis on the division’s Return to School website at www.k12albemarle.org/returntoschool.
