School Board Seeking Volunteers to Serve on Planning, Health Advisory Boards

(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – The Albemarle County School Board is accepting applications from county residents who are interested in serving their community as a member of either the Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee or the School Health Advisory Board. Both committees contend with issues that significantly influence the future quality of public education in the county.

The school board will appoint five individuals to the Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee, including representatives from the Jack Jouett, Rivanna, Scottsville, and White Hall magisterial districts, and a member at-large. Also open are eight seats on the School Health Advisory Board, including representatives from the Jack Jouett, Rio, Rivanna, Samuel Miller, Scottsville, and White Hall magisterial districts, plus an at-large member and an additional health professional member. For both advisory groups, the term of office is two years.

The Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee (LRPAC) informs and advises the superintendent and school board in the development of comprehensive, long-term plans for facility needs in the most effective way and in support of the school division’s strategic plan. Committee members must reside in the magisterial district they represent, with the exception of the at-large seat, which any resident of the county may hold.

The committee researches, reviews, and makes recommendations on issues such as school program capacity; enrollment and projections; transportation and operating efficiencies related to facilities planning; creative financing and construction strategies; scope of renovations; school closures and new schools; student accommodation planning; and the division’s requirements for innovative learning environments to accommodate its 21st century instructional model and associated technology resources.

LRPAC applicants should have an interest in or experience with school facilities and capital improvement program planning; demographics and economics; elementary, middle and high school programs and needs; public outreach and communication; and/or municipal design and construction. Members will interact and communicate with the school board and the public through work sessions and community and focus group meetings.

The School Health Advisory Board (SHAB) assists with developing health policy in the school division and evaluating the status of school health, health education, the school environment, and health services. The advisory board typically meets quarterly and reports annually on the status and needs of student health in the school division to any relevant school, the school board, the Virginia Department of Health, and the Virginia Department of Education.

As part of their work, SHAB may recommend procedures to the school board relating to children with acute or chronic illnesses or conditions, such as appropriate emergency procedures for any life-threatening conditions and designation of school personnel to implement the appropriate emergency procedures.

Applications for either advisory group are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2020. Applications should be submitted to Jennifer Johnston, Clerk of the School Board, by email at jjohnston@k12albemarle.org or by postal mail to 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Community members may direct questions or requests for additional information to Ms. Johnston by phone at 434-972-4055.
