Protecting Against COVID-19: Tonight’s School Board Meeting Is Canceled; Schools Will Close to Students on Monday
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – Continuing the Albemarle County school division’s emphasis on actions to prevent and contain the spread of COVID-19 in schools and in the community, the Albemarle County School Board has canceled their meeting this evening.
Separately, the school division announced all schools will be closed to students on Monday, March 16, to enable staff to plan for how instruction will be delivered in the event schools are closed in the future.
All staff and teachers will report to schools and offices on Monday to conduct and complete planning around the division’s continuing infection control measures, including the possible closing of schools. Teachers will be developing instructional materials for students who may be at home for an extended period of time. Planning also will encompass the delivery of meals to students who participate in the free and reduced meals program.
The division will continue to work closely with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) in monitoring breaking developments around COVID-19 and will reassess no later than this Monday whether schools should be closed for more than one day.
Guidance from the VDH provides that a school should be closed for a minimum of three days in the event a student or employee tests positive for COVID-19. To date, no cases have been confirmed by the health department in Albemarle County or the City of Charlottesville.
On Monday, the school division will offer its Extended Day Enrichment Holiday Program for children who are already registered. The program will be conducted on Monday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Greer Elementary School gymnasium. Children should bring a lunch and snacks with them from home.
