Nominations Now Open for 2020 Golden Apple Awards; Program Honors Excellence in Teaching & Community Outreach
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA) – Nominations are now open for the 2020
Golden Apple Awards. The program, which began in 2001, honors outstanding teachers in public and private schools in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City. Sponsored by Better Living Building Supply and Cabinetry, the program recognizes educators, from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade, for their outstanding classroom performance and influence on the success of their students.
Honorees are selected for a Golden Apple based upon demonstrated excellence in the classroom, innovative instructional strategies and techniques, and involvement in their local community. Students, parents, educators, and other members of the community may submit nominations. Previous Golden Apple recipients are eligible for a second award providing that three years have elapsed since they received their award.
Teachers selected for the award represent less than two percent of all teachers in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City public and private schools. Each year, one teacher is selected from each of the 40 public and private schools in the area.
In addition to receiving a Golden Apple, and for the first time in the program’s history, every Golden Apple recipient also will earn a grant of $500, which can be used for classroom materials or to support the teacher’s professional development.
Nomination criteria include creating a love of learning among all students, stimulating thought and dialogue in the classroom, raising student expectations for success, understanding and providing for individual student needs, and involving families in the education process.
Dr. Kevin Castner, retired Superintendent for Albemarle County Public Schools, again is chairing the selection committee for the awards. The committee also includes two parent council members from the county and city school divisions, Rhonda Angel and Jakki Crocker, along with retired county school principals, Jo Vining and Karen Marcus, and a retired city school faculty member, Veronica Jones. Also on the committee are Dave Welty, assistant dean of faculty for the Blue Ridge School, representing private schools, and Bekah Saxon, representing Blue Ridge Uniserv.
Nomination forms are available at individual schools or online at
www.k12albemarle.org. The deadline for school principals to receive nominations from students, parents, school staff, and community members is January 27, 2020.
The ceremony honoring the 2020 recipients will be at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, in Lane Auditorium in the County Office Building at 401 McIntire Road in Charlottesville.
