Local Non-Profit to Donate More Than $11,000 to Six Schools at WAHS Home Opener

(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – Tomorrow night, Arts in Western Education (AWE) will present a check for $11,467.49 to Western Albemarle High School (WAHS) Principal Patrick McLaughlin at the first home football game. This check represents funds awarded to teachers of art, drama, chorus and music at the Western feeder elementary schools, Henley Middle School, and Western Albemarle High School. The football game starts at 7 p.m. and the check will be presented at halftime.

AWE (ArtsInWesternEducation.org) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2014 to celebrate and bring support and awareness to the arts in schools in the western part of the county. Its funds come in part from ArtFest in the West, an annual community fundraising event hosted by AWE. In previous years, these funds have helped provide such materials as paint, costumes, instruments and cameras to teachers of the arts. Last year, these funds amounted to $13,600 and went toward 10 different grants.

“Ensuring that the visual and performing arts are thriving in our community is what AWE is all about!” said AWE President Mindy Beaumont. Of Friday’s event, Beaumont said, “Many of the parents filling the bleachers to support athletics have also enjoyed the plays, concerts and art exhibits our talented students work so hard to create. AWE’s contribution to Western, Henley, and the four feeder elementary schools not only bolsters tight budgets, but rewards individual teachers with relevant, direct funding. We want these passionate educators to really know that we love what they do for our kids!”

WAHS Assistant Principal Tim Driver, who is in charge of fine arts at the school, said of AWE, “This is a wonderful organization that has been providing support for six years. We are so thankful to have a community of people who love and support the arts.”

Teachers are encouraged to submit grant requests for the coming cycle starting this fall, and the next ArtFest in the West will take place on February 28, 2020. Historically, AWE has been able to fund all grant requests that it has received.

Friday night’s game is against Spotswood. The price of admission is $7.
