A First in Albemarle County Public Schools: 2013-14 Registration Will Be Online for Three High Schools
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – Beginning this month, all students who will be attending Albemarle, Monticello and Western Albemarle high schools will be able to complete registration for 2013-14 classes online.
On December 12, students who will be attending Albemarle or Monticello and their parents can logon to their Parent or Student Portal accounts to register course selections, a process that will conclude for Albemarle students on January 9, and for Monticello students on January 13. Western Albemarle students can register for classes between December 21 and January 9.
Current eighth-graders will be able to register for next year’s high school courses through their Parent Portal accounts between December 12 and January 13 for Walton students; from December 18 until January 13 for Burley students; from December 21 until January 9 for Henley students; and between December 22 and January 11 for Jouett and Sutherland students.
This will be the first time all students will be able to register for classes online, a system that will improve the efficiency and timeliness of the process for students and their parents while also reducing operational costs for the division.
“Online registration will improve our ability to respond to student interest in specific courses and more quickly assess instructional requirements and schedule teachers, ensuring that we offer students every opportunity to enroll in the classes that best meet their needs,” said Dr. Billy Haun, Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning.
Currently, seven out of 10 parents of high school students have a Parent Portal account, which enables them to review student grades and attendance records and communicate directly with teachers.
“We are pleased with the number of families connected with their child’s education through portal accounts, and this new registration option is an added service that we urge all parents and students to use,” said Dr. Haun. “We are hoping to provide these benefits to more families. Parents who do not yet have an active Parent Portal account should contact their school’s main office for assistance in setting up an account,” he added.
Upon contacting the main office for their child’s school, parents will receive an access code to establish an account. Schools will provide computer access for parents who would like to logon to their account while in the school building.
The course selection process for high school students begins next week with curriculum fairs at all three comprehensive high schools. Students will be able to review courses to be offered next year and receive course information. Western Albemarle’s fair is Monday, December 10; Albemarle’s is on Wednesday, December 12; and Monticello’s is Tuesday, December 18.
Transition meetings are being held this month for eighth-graders who will be attending high school next year, and their parents also will be able to register their child for classes online. A similar meeting will be held in February for private school parents and students who are interested in attending Albemarle, Monticello or Western Albemarle High School next year.
Conferences with guidance counselors to review course selections will be held between January and March of next year.
