Fifth graders join younger students in their classrooms for lunch!

MIX IT UP DAY

On Thursday, November 13th, students from all around Woodbrook participated in Mix It Up DayMix It Up is a national program that encourages students to cross boundaries, to question barriers, to meet new people, and make new friends.  At Woodbrook, students "mixed it up" by having lunch with a new group of friends.  Some students had lunch with a group from within their grade level while others got together with students from another grade.  What a great day!

Way to Go Woodbrook!

The Make a Difference Coin Challenge was an outstanding success!  Over $560 was raised and grade levels enjoyed a friendly competition in their efforts to support our local Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank.  The second grade team ended the week with the highest total, but all grade levels participated wonderfully!  Members of the second grade class are pictured with Dr. Sterrett, principal; Ms. Pearson; school counselor; and Ms. Stephanie Brown, Family Support Staff; as they present a check to Jefferson Branch Manager Mr. Anthony Tracy.  We were trying to match this total with 560 pounds of food for our Can Drive - and we have surpassed our goal!  Our students, as of Friday, Nov. 14th, have brought in over 600 pounds of food!  Thanks to all students and school community members for helping in this effort!

Woodbrook's First Reading Night a Huge Success!

Woodbrook held the fall reading night on Thursday, November 6.  Parents, students and staff enjoyed an evening of reading together in the school library.  Dr. Sterrett read aloud one of his favorite books, Owl Babies, to a crowd of 80.  Students enjoyed a snack and received a free book.  The next reading night will be held in March to honor Dr. Seuss's birthday.  (date not determined yet)

Artist Kristi Glick-Shank visited Woodbrook to conduct a workshop.  Kristi is an enamel artist. She creates wall pieces and jewelry in enamel.  Students got to see and touch her work as well as the materials she uses.  She has her studio at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville. Kristi earned an MFA from E. Carolina University.

Thank you, Day of Caring Volunteers and Boy Scout, Phillip Carpenter!

Two local groups, Alltell and the UVa Law Library, helped spruce up our Mary Underwood Learning Garden!  This event followed the hard work of Phillip Carpenter, an Albemarle High School Boy Scout who decided to take the courtyard project on this fall as part of an Eagle Scout Project.  Phillip designed and laid the bluestone path that meanders through the courtyard.  Phillip also built and placed two wooden benches.  This is a beautiful courtyard located in the heart of our school grounds in which grade levels have plots that are incorporated into their grade-level curriculum maps.  For specific information about the different plots, click Garden Assistance Link.
