Our Vision

The Vision for Agnor-Hurt Elementary
“When I approach a child, he inspires in me two sentiments: Tenderness for what he is, and respect for what he may become.” ~Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), Scientist

The Agnor-Hurt school community will always be on a journey towards excellence. This reflects an attitude of learning and improving that is evident in the students and staff. Learning standards (curriculum SOLs) define the knowledge and skills children require in order to become productive, informed, responsible and compassionate members of society. Meeting these standards is fundamental. At Agnor-Hurt Elementary, a fully accredited school, our focus is even deeper. Our passionate and committed group of educators stand for something very special. Their values are demonstrated each and every day inside the walls of our great school. We will exceed the standards, and for the right reason. To bring out the fullest potential in each child requires life long learning. Albemarle County has adopted 12 life long learner standards reflected in the Framework for Quality Learning that teachers at Agnor-Hurt will incorporate into their daily lessons. We want to bring out the wealth of every child that walks through our doors. By the time every child leaves Agnor-Hurt Elementary School, we want them to be aware of their own unique strengths and qualities and of how they learn best. We want them to have the kind of memories of their elementary school years that add warmth and meaning to their lives. We want them to feel secure and confident about themselves, to appreciate the arts, to appreciate diversity, and most importantly, we want them to be able to demonstrate compassion for those who are less fortunate.

Our learning community goes deeper than just meeting standards. We have achieved our initial goal of full accreditation. We are continually committed to engage students in high quality curriculum and instruction with the Framework for Quality Learning. The Framework for Quality Learning provides us with a tremendous opportunity to engage students in authentic and challenging learning experiences. At Agnor-Hurt we want to positively transform the lives of students so that their best shines forth. We welcome anyone who shares our vision to join us in this incredible journey. Every ounce of your positive energy can help children in profound ways. It is the little things that matter and it is the little things that touch the human heart. In Glasser’s most recent book (Every Student Can Succeed, October, 2000), he states, “successful teaching is based on strong relationships”. Children will learn from those they know genuinely care about them…those who trust inspires them to shine with their own special light.

We would like to send our heartfelt appreciation to the entire community for all of your support, and most importantly to the children who come to school trusting and believing in us! We are proud to be here serving the children and the families in this very special community of Agnor-Hurt.
